This week, my home page was hacked through an iframe javascript injection. Now, Google displays a warning note in its SERP pages just below the site title.

It is frustrating for surfers to be exposed to malware while surfing. They should be protected against such malicious acts to the greatest extent possible, and by any means available, including warning notices by search engines. But it is equally frustrating for victimized webmasters, like me, to see that that the image of their sites is damaged due to actions to which they are not a part, although they take every measure and correct the situation immediately after they become aware of the situation. This is a double damage indeed: one caused by the cyber-vandals, and one by the search engines.

At the moment I realized this, I promptly started to examine pages at turktrans.net, and discovered that an obscufated javascript code is inserted at the beginning of index page. When decoded to ASCII, it revealed an iframe javascript that attempts to download a malware into the user’s computer. I immediately removed the javascript code to protect my visitors, and changed passwords as the first measure. Then, I contacted StopBadware.org  to review my site. An automatic reply says that it will take at least 10 days to review. I hope that this will not take longer, and that they notify google to remove the warning note.

Although Google says that they notify webmasters of any such badware here, I did not receive any notification. As an affected webmaster, I hold the opinion that I should be warned by Google. This way, I would act earlier, and thus prevent numerous visitors from being exposed to malware. Having cleared my affected page, I am anxiously waiting for Google to remove the warning note hoping that this will not last long, and that the reputation, and credibility of my site will not be damaged beyond repair.

Başlangıç olarak siteye aktarılan İngilizce dizinin bitmiş bir ürün olmadığını, hiçbir zaman da bitmiş bir ürün olarak görülemeyeceğini belirtmeye gerek yok. Bu daha çok her gün ya da sık sık güncellenen, düzeltilen, iyileştirilen bir çalışma olacaktır, herhangi bir sözlük çalışmasında olduğu gibi.

Dil dinamik bir olgudur ve dilin içindeki en dinamik unsurlar da deyimler, argo ifadeler, vb.dir. Deyimler ve deyimsel ifadeler, zamana, olaylara, toplumdaki gelişmelere son derecede duyarlıdır ve çok çabuk değişebilmektedir. Bu bile, deyimler sözlüğü gibi bir çalışmada kesintisiz güncellemeyi zorunlu kılmaya yeter.

Deyimler ve deyimsel ifadeler sadece zamana ve olaylara bağlı olarak değil, ayrıca kültüre, alt-kültürlere, hatta küçük gruplara bağlı olarak da değişebilmektedir. Deyimlerin bir yöreden diğerine, bir ilden, kasabadan diğerine, hatta bir sokaktan diğerine değiştiğini görmek bizi şaşırtmaz. Bu da deyimleri ve deyimsel ifadeleri bir kültürden diğerine aktarmanın ne kadar zor olabileceğine işaret eder.

Deyimler ve atasözleri, belli yaşantıları, bir görüşü, bir düşünceyi kendisini oluşturan sözcüklere bambaşka anlamlar yükleyerek özlü bir şekilde anlatabilen ifadelerdir. Yapıları ve ortaya çıkışları farklı olsa da, özellikle özlü sözler ve özlü söz niteliğindeki deyimler için, bir kültürde ortak yaşantıların, tarihin, birikimlerin dilin süzgecinden geçmiş, kristalleşmiş özeti şeklinde bir tanım verebiliriz.

Bu tanımdan yola çıkarak deyimler sözlüğü veritabanında gelip geçici olandan çok, kalıcı, bugünden yarına değişmeyen deyimlere ve deyimsel ifadelere öncelik vereceğiz.

Online alan sözlükleri hazırlamak, daha doğrusu bu tür sözlükleri “tek çatı altında” toplamak gibi bir hırsım var. Bir yılı aşkın bir süredir bu proje üzerinde çalışıyorum. Bu amaçla bir alan adı aldım, biraz programcılık öğrendim ve ilk online sözlüğü yayınladım: İlk basımı 2000 yılında Bilim ve Sanat Yayınevi tarafından yapılan İngilizce-Türkçe Psikoloji Sözlüğü’nün önemli bir bölümünü veritabanına aktararak siteye yükledim. Şu ana kadar 3 baskı yapan ve önümüzdeki yıl dördüncü baskısını yapacağını tahmin ettiğim sözlükte, 9,000′i aşkın terim ve kavram yer almaktadır. Bu haliyle, Türkiye’deki mevcut en kapsamlı Psikoloji sözlüğüdür.

Psikoloji Sözlüğü‘nün online versiyonunda ise şu anda 5,000 civarında terim yer alıyor. Kısa zamanda, Psikoloji alanındaki en kapsamlı online sözlüklerden birisi olacağını umduğum bu online versiyona, yeni basım yapılıncaya kadar 3,000 kadar terim daha eklemeyi planlıyorum. Ayrıca zaman buldukça, tıpkı matbu halindeki gibi, resim ve grafikler eklemeye çalışacağım.

Ayrıca, sözlüğe uzaktan sorgulama erişimi için bir de sorgulama seçeneği ekledim. Site sahipleri, sitene ekle sayfasındaki birkaç satırlık kodu kopyalayıp sitelerine ekleyerek, kendi ziyaretçilerine sözlük sorgulama imkanı sunabilecekler. Arama kutusunu hem İngilizce hem de Türkçe arama yapabilecek şekilde düzenledim. Ancak açıklamaların Türkçe olduğunu da hatırlatayım. Bunun yanı sıra, sözlüğe bir de kullanıcı katkılarını mümkün kılacak seçenekler eklemeyi düşünüyorum. Böylece site kullanıcıları, sözlüğe katkıda bulunabilecekler ve/veya düzelti/iyileştirme önerebileceklerdir.

Gerek çevirmenlerin, gerekse alan öğrencilerinin ve genel psikoloji okurlarının sözlüğü yararlı bulacağını umuyorum.

I have an ambition to launch online specialized dictionaries and/or glossaries, or more correctly, to collect such dictionaries “under one roof.” To this end, I launched a site with a suitable domain name (termbank). Now, I launched my first dictionary online: I uploaded a great part of my English Turkish Dictionary of Psychology originally published by Bilim ve Sanat Yayınları, Ankara in 2000. It has 3 reprints since then, and I guess that it will be reprinted for the 4th time in 2007. With more than 9,000 entries, it is the most comprehensive Psychology dictionary currently available in Turkey.

And, with some 5,000 entries, the online version of my English Turkish Dictionary of Psychology is one of the largest online dictionaries on Psychology on the net. I am planning to add another 3,000 entries until a new edition is published as a paperback.

I also added a lookup option for remotely querying the dictionary. By adding  a few lines of lookup code on their pages, webmasters can offer dictionary lookup to their own visitors. The search box functions in both languages, i.e., users can search both in English and Turkish (definitions are only in Turkish). I am also planning to include an option for user contributions whereby users can contribute terms/definitions to the dictionary, or suggest improvements/corrections.

I hope that visitors will find my online dictionary useful.

Well, finally I decided to upgrade my blog to Wordpress 2.0.3. As I noted previously, WP 1.5 has some security issues that need to be addressed. Current version seems fixed a number of such security issues. I hope that this also involves preventing automated comment spam.

I also changed the “skin” or “theme” of the blog from “connections” to “default.” I made this change due to a “bug” in the functioning of “connections” theme: I inserted a conditional ”noindex, follow” tag for the archived content in connections, assuming that it will work as required. But yesterday, I noticed that the “noindex, follow” tag is generated outside the “head” metatag. That is to say, it was not functional in terms of instructing the crawlers not to index the archieved content, but follow the links contained there. From another blog of mine, I already know that the default theme works well in this regard. Therefore, I switched to the default theme, and implemented the code.

But this time, I noticed that the “is_archive” encompasses all archieves, i.e., archieved content grouped both in terms of dates as well as categories. This is something that I do not like to have. So I changed it to “is_month” which only have an effect on monthly archieves. And it seems working perfectly. Finally, I decided to remove this instruction for a while. For those who are concerned with duplicate content issues, but also wants to retain the PR of their category pages can use conditional “is_month” instruction safely.
